The Music Industry Report // Indie Labels Are On The Rise

The Music Industry Report // Indie Labels Are On The Rise

From: The Music Industry Report via Daily Swarm

“* Independent labels accounted for 32% of aggregate album sales in 2008, up almost 1.5% from 2007.

* Independent artists won 56 awards at this year’s Grammys, up from 36 last year. That marks over 50% of all prizes given out.

* Independent labels, as a group, are the largest owners of master recordings in the industry – over 80% of America’s music is under independent ownership. These labels aren’t just diverse in genre, but in size and business model, ranging from single-artist-owned labels to imprints with decades of history and catalog. What makes a label “an indie” is that its master recordings are not owned by one of the major labels.

* That overwhelming majority of master recordings is testament to the diversity of genres covered by independent labels. The result is remarkable music that crosses boundaries, and may account for why indies notched the best album Grammy in an incredible 24 different genres in 2009.

*On top internet broadcasting platforms, where consumer choice reigns, indies thrive. Overall, independent music makes up approximately 40% of all music played at non-traditional web radio and at industry leading webcaster Pandora, over half of the music users play is independent.

*Consumer choice reigns at digital retailers as well, and the numbers reflect it, with indie market share at digital rising to 38%. Retailers are on board as well, in fact two-thirds of A2IM members have direct deals with iTunes, the industry-leading music retailer.

* In short – when traditional gatekeepers and obstacles to reaching fans are removed, indies thrive.”

Dr. Lonnie Smith // Master of the Hammond B3 Organ

Dr. Lonnie Smith // Master of the Hammond B3 Organ

“The organ is like sunlight, rain and thunder—it’s all the worldly sounds to me!”

Dr. Lonnie Smith is the undisputed Master of the Hammond B3 organ. For over five decades he has furthered the sound of Jazz Organ, created a worldwide fan-base, and revealed his musical talents on over seventy albums. Lonnie has recorded and performed with legends King Curtis, Jimmy McGriff, Grover Washington, Jr. and Dizzy Gillespie, to name a few.

The Buffalo native has consistently been a leading force in jazz since 1969 when critics for Downbeat magazine hailed him as ‘Top Organist of 1969.’ More recently he has been selected as ‘Organ Keyboardist of the Year’ by The Jazz Journalist Association in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

“Dapper Dan” is off of his new album Rise Up! (Palmetto Records).

Lee Fields // Truth, Deception, & Lies (Aloe Blacc Remix)

Lee Fields // Truth, Deception, & Lies (Aloe Blacc Remix)
Lee Fields

I had the opportunity to interview Leon Michels, co-founder of Truth & Soul Records and frontman of El Michels Affair this morning. We discussed his phenomenal new album Enter The 37th Chamber, which features full instrumental reinterpretations of classic tracks by the Wu-Tang Clan. He was extremely excited about his upcoming project with funk legend Lee “Little J.B.” Fields. Leon mentioned that when Truth & Soul started as a record label in 2004, the first mission was to ‘record a sweet soul record that would be modeled after the near perfect formula that bands like The Moments, The Delfonics, and The Stylistics had created.’ Based on the first single “Ladies,” he’s achieved his goal.

Michels was nice enough to give us an exclusive MP3 of Aloe Blacc’s remix of Lee Fields song, “Truth, Deception, & Lies.”

WSJ // Napster Lives On, Focuses on Streaming

WSJ // Napster Lives On, Focuses on Streaming

Written by Marisa Taylor for Wall Street Journal
“How many times can one company reconfigure itself? Napster, the storied file-sharing site that was shut down in 2001, relaunched in 2003 as an online music store and bought by Best Buy in 2008, might hold the record.

Now the service is reinventing itself again. It said Monday that it will relaunch its music-streaming service and offer it for $5 a month. It will allow customers to download five DRM-free MP3s as part of their subscription and will give them unlimited streaming access to the entire Napster music library of more than 7 million songs.

Napster previously offered unlimited streaming access for at least $12.95 a month, with downloads priced at 69 cents to $1.29 per song.

“We think it’s a great way to introduce on-demand streaming to hopefully a much larger audience, to see if we can now catalyze this business model and grow into the mass market,” said Napster CEO Chris Gorog. “It puts us in a position to say, without qualification, that it is simply the best value out there in digital music.” Continue reading @ WSJ.com
