Catching Up With Matty McLoughlin of The Soft Pack
By Roger Linehan
“We were kind of in a whirlwind for a little while” explains Matty McLoughlin about his band’s hectic rise in popularity, “but once we changed our name, everyone thought we were the wackest shit. He irreverently laments, “So, the second we got any sort of recognition… we changed our name. And then we were like this lame band for a while [laughs].”
The band’s decision to drop The Muslims moniker and go with the less controversial The Soft Pack may have caused initial backlash, but the strength of their eponymous LP (their first since the name change) quieted any clamor. The band is now recording a new album, which is set to be released later on this year. Says McLoughlin, “We recorded 12 songs last July, and now we’re writing 4 or 5, and we’re going to record again. Out of those we’ll have the album. We’ve been writing for a year.”
