Dr. Lonnie Smith // Master of the Hammond B3 Organ

“The organ is like sunlight, rain and thunder—it’s all the worldly sounds to me!”

Dr. Lonnie Smith is the undisputed Master of the Hammond B3 organ. For over five decades he has furthered the sound of Jazz Organ, created a worldwide fan-base, and revealed his musical talents on over seventy albums. Lonnie has recorded and performed with legends King Curtis, Jimmy McGriff, Grover Washington, Jr. and Dizzy Gillespie, to name a few.

The Buffalo native has consistently been a leading force in jazz since 1969 when critics for Downbeat magazine hailed him as ‘Top Organist of 1969.’ More recently he has been selected as ‘Organ Keyboardist of the Year’ by The Jazz Journalist Association in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

“Dapper Dan” is off of his new album Rise Up! (Palmetto Records).

I saw Dr. Lonnie perform in February, and encourage anyone who has the chance to do likewise. He’s the real deal, an artist from back when being a musician and being an entertainer were not mutually exclusive.

This side is a fine introduction to his work, which is rolicking, deep and soulful.

Be sure to check out his two classic live albums on Blue Note: “Move Your Hand” (1969) and “Live at Club Mozambique” (1970)…Killer stuff !!
