Antibalas // Brooklyn In the House

Antibalas // Brooklyn In the House

“We are having us a liberal good time in the Washington Mutual Memorial Tent”

Stuart Bogie (center in blue shirt)

Fela Kuti was smiling down on Austin today. While Friday’s Austin City Limits Music Festival lineup boasted the likes of Gogol Bordello, Hot Chip, N.E.R.D. and Vampire Weekend, Brooklyn’s Antibalas high-energy set stole day one. Tenor Sax player Stuart Bogie was the ringleader encouraging the audience to participate with the eleven member tribal-funk-soul group. Bogie and the horn section are featured on the new TV On The Radio album Dear Science. He was responsible for the horns arrangements on TOVR’s “Crying” and “Red Dress“.

Tour Dates:

Deerhoof // Offend Maggie

Deerhoof // Offend Maggie
Satomi Matsuzaki Of Deerhoof

Last month I wrote about Deerhoof’s highly anticipated album Offend Maggie. The talented trio from San Francisco’s new single “Offend Maggie” doesn’t disappoint.

Lead-singer Satomi Matsuzaki’s uses her unique voice to carry this pop-melodic track with a far east undertone. Deerhoof is an acquired taste; give the track a couple spins. I look forward to hearing the rest of the album due out October 7th.

They launch their North American tour in Los Angeles @ The Avalon on 10/3 (Tickets)
A percentage of all digital sales from Offend Maggie will go to benefit one of the following organizations:

1. Why Tuesday?
2. FAIR
3. Peace Action West
4. Z Magazine
5. Doctors Without Borders

The Black Angels // Austin’s Finest

The Black Angels // Austins Finest
Kyle Hunt (bottom right-hand corner)

I just landed in Austin and the weather is beautiful. I’m heading over to meet The Black Angels’ Kyle Hunt and his lovely wife Rachel. Kyle plays keyboards, percussion, bass and guitar for the Austin based group. It’s an exciting time for the band. They are currently working on their 3rd album with 60’s legend Roky Erickson of the 13th Floor Elevators. Erickson also an Austin native is the pioneer of the psychedelic rock genre. The Angels begin their fall tour Sunday at Stubb’s with the Black Keys.

The Angels & Erickson are playing together Halloween night at The El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. They will open the show and then join Erickson set as the rhythm section.

Rollo & Grady // Austin City Limits 2008

Rollo & Grady // Austin City Limits 2008

I will be in Austin this weekend to catch this year’s Austin City Limits Festival. The three day festival celebrates it’s seventh year in existence with performances by Band Of Horses, Raconteurs, Xavier Rudd, Beck, Antibalas, David Byrne, The Kills, The Black Keys and many more.

There are also amazing late night performances held around the city. I plan on catching the Drive-By Truckers at Emo’s Friday night and The Black Keys with The Black Angels on Sunday night at Stubb’s.

Both ACL and Lollapalooza are put on by Austin’s C3 Presents.

I will do my best to update the blog this weekend.

Coldplay // Yellow

Coldplay // Yellow

I ran across Coldplay’s acoustic version of “Shiver” in my iTunes library yesterday. It wasn’t that long ago when I used to enjoy Coldplay’s music. I didn’t care that they ripped off Radiohead , Chris Martin married Gwyneth Paltrow or even The Garden State soundtrack. I think that X&Y was an average album and they were overexposed on their recent effort Viva La Vida. The advertising campaign for the record was ridiculous. They need to scale it back a notch on their next release.

Not sure what the future holds for these guys. We will see.

Paste Magazine // October 2008 Sampler

Paste Magazine // October 2008 Sampler
Andrew Bird

I received my October issue of Paste Magazine this afternoon. PM is one of my favorite offline publications. They do a great job of covering the indie scene without selling out. The issue features Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, Old Crow Medicine Show, Damien Jurado, Wayne Coyne and many others.

Each issue includes a CD sampler with at least 20 handpicked new songs. The magazine is worth purchasing for the sampler alone. I picked out several standout tracks from Andrew Bird, Kensington Prairie and S.M.V.

Gorillaz // New Album

Gorillaz // New Album

According to NME, Blur’s Damon Albarn and animator Jamie Hewlett are set to begin work on a new Gorillaz album. The pair also revealed that the release may see a new visual look for the animated band. This comes as a surprise as Damon Albarn stated that there would be no more Gorillaz albums. The forthcoming third album will be the follow-up to 2005’s Demon Days and 2001’s self-titled album.

Update: British rapper, and frequent Africa Express collaborator Kano, has spoken to the UK’s Daily Star about the upcoming Gorillaz album. According to the musician, the album will be completed before the Blur reunion shows. Kano appears on a few of the new tracks.

Will Holland // Quantic

Will Holland // Quantic

British DJ and producer Quantic (Will Holland) is a hard working man. He has released 9 albums and several EP’s before his 30th birthday. Holland also performs with The Quantic Soul Orchestra and The Limp Twins.

His music draws upon elements of salsa, bossa nova, soul, funk and jazz. Holland plays guitars, bass, double bass, piano, organ, saxophone and percussion. His music is phenomenal.
I recommend digging deep into his musical catalog. Starting with Death Of The Revolution by Quantic Presents…Flowering Inferno.

Quantic is currently based out of Cali, Valle del Cauca Colombia.
