Ofege // Try And Love

Ofege
My love of African music continues with the Nigerian band Ofege. This album might be the best of the bunch. Ofege recorded Try and Love in 1973, while they were still in high school. The 5-piece band (aged 15 – 17) consisted of Paul Alade (bass & vocals), Felix Inneh (guitar & vocals), Melvin Ukachi (vocals), Mlke Meme (drums & vocals) and Dapo Olumide (keyboard). Heavy western influences can be found on the album: Traffic, Carlos Santana, Velvet Underground and Jeff Beck come to mind. “It’s Not Easy” is 10% “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and 90% “Oh! Sweet Nuthin.”

The intro reminds me of “Can’t You See” by Marshall Tucker Band. That came out in 1973 as well so maybe it’s just a coincidence, not influence.

Bird, I can see that. “Can’t You See” is an excellent song.
