Coachella // Under The Radar
Tinariwen

We’re 13 days away from this year’s Coachella festival. I’m heading down on Saturday the 18th to enjoy the festivities. I’m looking forward to catching Thenewno2, Tinariwen and Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti’s sets (schedule permitting).

Tinariwen is a band formed in 1982 of Tuareg people who had been drafted into Muammar al-Gaddafi’s army. They play in the Tishoumaren (“music of the unemployed”) style, and sing mostly in the French and Tamashek languages. The group is known for their extraordinary guitar play.

Thenewno2 is a band formed by George Harrison’s son Dhani Harrison and Oliver Hecks. There are definitely vocal and melodic similarities between Dhani and his late father. The group recently performed on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

Avant-garde musician Ariel Pink was raised in the Pico-Robertson area of Los Angeles and attended Beverly Hills High School. His group Haunted Graffiti opened up several shows for Animal Collective earlier in the year. The band is touring the US in April and May, then they are off to Europe.
