SXSW 2010 // Bands That Are Going To Blow Up

Rollo & Grady The Bomb

Yesterday we posted a preview of over 180 bands that we feel are worth checking out at South by Southwest. Today we focus on 25 artists that are among the best of the 2000+ participating bands at SXSW. The futures of these bands are bright, and we certainly recommend seeing them play at least once during the festival in Austin this weekend.

Rollo & Grady // Guide To SXSW – A to Z

sxsw R&G

Rollo & Grady is heading to Austin later this week. Almost 2000 bands are participating this year at South By Southwest, and deciding which shows to attend can be overwhelming. After sampling roughly 1200 bands, we selected 200 bands to check out. Many of these artists we’ve covered in the past, but we’ve also discovered several new groups that we’re excited to share with you. Tomorrow we’re highlighting 25 artists that we feel will generate the biggest buzz at (and after) the festival.

SXSW // $99 Million Dollar Machine

SXSW // $99 Million Dollar Machine

South by Southwest funneled $99 million into the local economy last year, according to a comprehensive study released today by Greyhill Advisors. The 2009 South by Southwest Music, Film and Interactive Conferences and Festivals was the 23rd time the city threw the several day event. This year’s kicks off March 11.

Though the music portion has long experienced the highest draw, film events posted significant growth last year and SXSW Interactive attendance jumped 30 percent.
The five-nights of music featured more than 1,900 artists from 80 stages last year, while 330 films were cast on eight screens. Greyhill officials said SXSW was directly and indirectly responsible for injecting approximately $99 million into the Austin economy. Operations contributed $20 million to that total and attendance accounted for about $78.8 million.
Considering the combined value of media coverage across television broadcasts, news stories, and sponsor advertising in 2009, this city also benefited from another $21.4 million.

Those Darlins // The Buzz Band of SXSW 09
Jessi Darlin @ Tap Room – SXSW 2009 (Photo – Rollo & Grady)

At BMI’s Pre-SXSW party, Those Darlins proudly announced “We’re virgins to South by Southwest, but we’re going to slut it up all week.” And, slut it up they did – musically – playing seven shows during the festival. The trio from Murfreesboro, Tennessee received positive press from The New York Times, Billboard, USA Today, The LA Times, Paste Magazine, The Chicago Tribune and The Dallas Observer, making them the most talked about band at SXSW.

I saw these ladies the week before SXSW opening up for Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. Before the show, I listened to their EP and thought they were too “country” for my taste. But, after seeing them scorch through their set, I changed my mind about The Darlins. The Carter Family musical influence is obvious on their EP, but live, they could easily pass for cousins of The Avett Brothers.

Those Darlins are a marketers dream, but one of the bands most endearing qualities is their authenticity. Their self-titled debut album will be out on July 7.

White Denim // Best SXSW Show So Far…

I just got back from the White Denim show hosted by Gorilla vs. Bear at the Peacock Lounge. By far the best show I’ve seen at the festival. Opening act The Wavves played an impressive set. I ran into King Khan on the way home. I can’t wait to catch a couple of his shows.

Last night The Avett Brothers were amazing, but their set was cut short. Major disappointment. The Heartless Bastards rocked!

Austin’s Black Joe Lewis did not disappoint on his major label debut. The Lost Highway recording artist’s album Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is! showcases his soul, funk, R&B and blues influences. Producer Jim Eno of Spoon did an excellent job of capturing Joe’s live sound in the studio. It’s one of my favorite albums of the year.

I’m sure I’m leaving off some acts, but the shows listed below are going to be phenomenal. I’m especially excited about the Silversun Pickups show. It will be near impossible to get into the Devo, PJ Harvey & John Parish, Perry Farrell and M. Ward shows. If you’ve got a hook-up let me know.
