New Album Releases For Tuesday (11/18/2008)

New Album Releases For Tuesday (11/18/2008)
Fab Moretti

“I tell you this, I don’t know what’s going to happen man, but I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.” Jim Morrison on astrology

It’s a pretty good week for new releases. The debut album from Strokes’ drummer Fab Moretti’s side project Little Joy is the best of the bunch. Moretti is joined by Los Angeles native Binki Shapiro and Rodrigo Amarante (Los Hermanos). The band is playing December 7th @ The Troubadour. Tickets are still available (Buy Tix $15). I assume this show will sell out soon; hipsters paradise. That said, I just bought tickets.

Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan’s album Sunday At Devil Dirt is great.

Anathallo has created quite a buzz. Some bloggers are calling Canopy Glow one of the best albums of the year. I wouldn’t go that far. The musical arrangements are nice, but I still need to give it a few more listens.

I haven’t heard The Doors album, safe bet it’s good. Ditto with Belle & Sebastian.

Dengue Fever // Tiger Phone Card

Dengue Fever // Tiger Phone Card

Dengue Fever – an acute infectious disease that is characterized by headache, severe joint pain, and a rash that is caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes.

I plan on catching Dengue Fever’s set while I’m in Austin for the Fun Fun Fun Fest. The six-member band from Los Angeles is led by charismatic Cambodian singer, Chhom Nimol. She is able to seamlessly mix two languages in their songs, similar to the style of Satomi Matsuzaki from Deerhoof. It’s quirky pop, but worth checking out.

Dead Confederate // Heavy Petting

Dead Confederate // Heavy Petting

I’m really digging Dead Confederate’s new album Wrecking Ball. The Georgia-based band’s dark and haunting music has elements of Grunge, Alt. Country, Punk and Psychedelic Rock. Lead-singer Hardy Morris’s raw, howling vocals on “Heavy Petting” are reminiscent of Kurt Cobain’s on “Scentless Apprentice“.

The band has generated well-deserved buzz. They opened up for REM at this year’s SXSW and were recently named one of “Fricke’s Picks” by Rolling Stone journalist David Fricke.

These guys have tremendous upside. You can catch them @ Spaceland 11/14 (More Info). I hear that they put on an amazing live show.

Rollo & Grady // Los Angeles Concert Calendar

Rollo & Grady // Los Angeles Concert Calendar
There are some excellent concerts coming up in the next couple months. I’ve tried to weed out the clutter and focus on the quality shows.

I’m locked and loaded for Deerhoof, The Whigs, Ray LaMontagne, Medeski, Martin and Wood, The Black Angels, TV On The Radio, The Roots and West Indian Girl. I’m on the fence for She & Him, I love their music, but it has gotten a little too cutesy for me.

Van Morrison, Oasis with Ryan Adams and Smashing Pumpkins tickets go on sale to the general public this weekend. I have a couple problems with these shows; Van Morrison is a legend, but the tickets are too expensive ($75-$350), same with The Smashing Pumpkins ($79-$179). I’m a huge Pumpkins fan, but you are taking a major risk by expecting a good show. Oasis with Ryan Adams is a no-brainer if it wasn’t at The Staples Center. Driving to downtown Los Angeles during rush hour to a huge venue, paying for parking, sitting in average seats and poor sound quality doesn’t do it for me anymore.

Don’t miss TV On The Radio (few tickets left), Medeski, Martin and Wood or Ray LaMontagne (Craigslist).
