New Album Releases For Tuesday (11/18/2008)
Fab Moretti

“I tell you this, I don’t know what’s going to happen man, but I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.” Jim Morrison on astrology

It’s a pretty good week for new releases. The debut album from Strokes’ drummer Fab Moretti’s side project Little Joy is the best of the bunch. Moretti is joined by Los Angeles native Binki Shapiro and Rodrigo Amarante (Los Hermanos). The band is playing December 7th @ The Troubadour. Tickets are still available (Buy Tix $15). I assume this show will sell out soon; hipsters paradise. That said, I just bought tickets.

Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan’s album Sunday At Devil Dirt is great.

Anathallo has created quite a buzz. Some bloggers are calling Canopy Glow one of the best albums of the year. I wouldn’t go that far. The musical arrangements are nice, but I still need to give it a few more listens.

I haven’t heard The Doors album, safe bet it’s good. Ditto with Belle & Sebastian.

Dengue Fever // Tiger Phone Card

Dengue Fever // Tiger Phone Card

Dengue Fever - an acute infectious disease that is characterized by headache, severe joint pain, and a rash that is caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes.

I plan on catching Dengue Fever’s set while I’m in Austin for the Fun Fun Fun Fest. The six-member band from Los Angeles is led by charismatic Cambodian singer, Chhom Nimol. She is able to seamlessly mix two languages in their songs, similar to the style of Satomi Matsuzaki from Deerhoof. It’s quirky pop, but worth checking out.

Dead Confederate // Heavy Petting

Dead Confederate // Heavy Petting

I’m really digging Dead Confederate’s new album Wrecking Ball. The Georgia-based band’s dark and haunting music has elements of Grunge, Alt. Country, Punk and Psychedelic Rock. Lead-singer Hardy Morris’s raw, howling vocals on “Heavy Petting” are reminiscent of Kurt Cobain’s on “Scentless Apprentice“.

The band has generated well-deserved buzz. They opened up for REM at this year’s SXSW and were recently named one of “Fricke’s Picks” by Rolling Stone journalist David Fricke.

These guys have tremendous upside. You can catch them @ Spaceland 11/14 (More Info). I hear that they put on an amazing live show.

Rollo & Grady // Los Angeles Concert Calendar

There are some excellent concerts coming up in the next couple months. I’ve tried to weed out the clutter and focus on the quality shows.

I’m locked and loaded for Deerhoof, The Whigs, Ray LaMontagne, Medeski, Martin and Wood, The Black Angels, TV On The Radio, The Roots and West Indian Girl. I’m on the fence for She & Him, I love their music, but it has gotten a little too cutesy for me.

Van Morrison, Oasis with Ryan Adams and Smashing Pumpkins tickets go on sale to the general public this weekend. I have a couple problems with these shows; Van Morrison is a legend, but the tickets are too expensive ($75-$350), same with The Smashing Pumpkins ($79-$179). I’m a huge Pumpkins fan, but you are taking a major risk by expecting a good show. Oasis with Ryan Adams is a no-brainer if it wasn’t at The Staples Center. Driving to downtown Los Angeles during rush hour to a huge venue, paying for parking, sitting in average seats and poor sound quality doesn’t do it for me anymore.

Don’t miss TV On The Radio (few tickets left), Medeski, Martin and Wood or Ray LaMontagne (Craigslist).

Los Angeles, CA 90048
Phone: (323) 852-1552

Disclaimer:
I did not know that El Carmen and Jones (July Featured Jukebox) were owned by the same person. I love both places and they have excellent Jukeboxes. There’s some overlap in tunes, but in a good way.

Jukebox // El Carmen

El Carmen has been in business since 1927 and for the past 10 years it’s been located on 3rd Street. A rare feat for this town. They offer over 450 different brands of tequila; prices range from $7 to $300 a pour. The beautiful Blanca was working behind the bar with Mike. Both of them have been working for the institution for several years and they know their shit.

*Valet Parking
*Tacos are great
*Crazy old-school paintings of Mexican Wrestlers hang from the ceiling
*Limited seating, so get there early
*Non-Hollywood Crowd

Jukebox: $5 dollars for 18 selections (Sly And The Family Stone, Van Halen, Stones, Hendrix, Sex Pistols and Clash and many others)

Deerhoof // Milk Man

Deerhoof // Milk Man

San Francisco based Deerhoof have a new album called Offend Maggie coming out October 7th via the Kill Rock Stars label [Decemberists, Thao]. It’s hard to place this band in one particular category, there are hints of 90’s indie rock, heavy metal and punk. Lead vocalist and bassist Satomi Matsuzaki has a beautiful voice and great supporting cast . They caught the eye of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and he asked them to open up some west coast shows on RH’s last tour. I’m a huge fan of “Milk Man“.

They will be playing October 3rd at The Avalon.

The Avett Brothers // Murder In The City

The Avett Brothers // Murder In The City

“Concord, North Carolina’s Avett Brothers drew a massive (and especially rowdy) crowd to Bonnaroo’s Other Tent Saturday, picking and stomping their punk-tinged bluegrass into the stratosphere and proving why they just may be one of the most underrated acts at this year’s festival.” Spin.com 6/17/08

I’ve been hesitant about writing this post. In order to do so, I have to disclose that The Avett Brothers show @ The El Rey on March 30th of this year is one of the best ones I’ve seen in the last 5 years. Better than Radiohead in June 2006 @ The Greek, The White Stripes in August of 2005 @ The Greek and Band Of Horses in December of last year @ The Earl. It’s a strong statement so do not pass judgment until you see these guys live. Brothers Scott, Seth and their platonic brother Bob Crawford, play with an explosive energy and enthusiasm as if each show is their last. It’s that good.

1.) My Morning Jacket–The Wiltern, LA (1/6/07)
2.) The Avett Brothers–The El Rey, LA (3/30/08)
3.) Radiohead–The Greek, LA (6/29/06)
4,) The White Stripes–The Greek, LA (8/17/05)
5.) Xavier Rudd–The El Rey, LA (6/25/07)
6.) Band Of Horses–The Earl, Atlanta (12/28/07)

Pretty Girl From Chile” from their critically acclaimed album, Emotionalism, captures the spirit of one of their live shows. It begins as a traditional bluegrass song, and then at the 2:11 mark it shifts into a Spanish “sambaesque” feel; at 4:37 mark it becomes a full blown punk-rock song.

The song of the day, “Murder In The City“, off of The Second Gleam EP, showcases The Brothers talent for writing and storytelling. It’s truly an amazing song. Keep an eye on these guys; 2009 will be their well deserved breakout year.
