Alabama Shakes

CMJ music festival begins this week in New York. Skinny jeans are being pressed, fedoras are getting sized, and dark, thick-framed glasses are being adjusted. While we will not be making the trek, we would like to give our recommendations from afar.

The festival boasts plenty of bands that have already made names for themselves and that are must see shows, like Atlas Sound, Portugal. The Man, Shonen Knife, and J. Mascis. Other bands, such as Givers or Unknown Mortal Orchestra, have secured contracts with labels, and are definitely worth checking out, especially Gary Clark Jr. Lord Huron is another band on the verge of breaking out on a national level; they’re currently working on a full-length album that features two of their best songs to date: “She Lit A Fire” and “Man Who Lives Forever.”

Lord Huron

Record industry people will be watching Alabama Shakes and Fidlar closely. The LA-based punk band Fidlar will blow people’s minds in Brooklyn and New York. Word of advice: don’t wear a suit and expect to have beer spilled on you. They are loud as fuck and basically incite riots at their shows. They absolutely rip and I highly recommend catching a few of their gigs while they are in town.

Fuck IT Dog

I haven’t seen Alabama Shakes perform live, but I’ve heard they are excellent. The blog world went nuts after Justin Gage of Aquarium Drunkard posted about the band when they were known as The Shakes. Their lead singer Brittany Howard’s soulful voice is the best I’ve heard since the late Amy Winehouse.
