New Herbaliser// ‘Geddim!’ – Session 2

New Herbaliser// Geddim! Session 2

The Herbaliser just released a new track, “Geddim!,” from their upcoming album Session 2 [August 4th via !K7]. The band has been perfecting their Blaxploitation and vintage funk sound since they first started touring with a live band in early 2000. Session 2 finds the band re-visiting an outlet (The Session Series) designed to showcase the way their songs are performed live. “Geddim!” would make the late Isaac Hayes proud. It also has a touch of the “Love Boat Theme” floating around on the track.

Bon Iver Working On New Side Project – Volcano Choir

Bon Iver Working On New Side Project Volcano Choir

VOLCANO CHOIR – Unmap (Release Date – 09/22/09)

From Jagjaguwar

Volcano Choir is an assembly of Wisconsinites Jon Mueller, Chris Rosenau, Jim Schoenecker, Daniel Spack, Justin Vernon, and Thomas Wincek. You might find these old friends also frequenting records and stages under different monikers, Collections of Colonies of Bees and Bon Iver. The collaboration predates the meteoric rise of Justin Vernon’s Bon Iver project, with original songwriting dating back to the summer of 2005, right around the time the Bees first toured with Vernon’s previous band DeYarmond Edison.

While entirely a studio record, the collection doesn’t suffer from the overburdens of a digital pile up or over-thinking. Rather it breathes and convulses in equal measure, radiating an inherent dynamism found only in the voluntary bondage of intimacy. With influences ranging from David Sylvian and Steve Reich to Mahalia Jackson and Tom Waits, it might be more accurate to say the group’s influence is music itself. You can hear it in the care and real love generously applied to each moment of Unmap (new album). With the vibe of some intimate backwoods gospel, plus a spirit of patience and thoughtful repetition, the music of Volcano Choir is as dynamic as it is lovely.

New Jim James E.P. and All-Star Folk Album In The Works

[Via Michael D. Ayers of Billboard Magazine]
“Although roots-rock act My Morning Jacket are enjoying some much needed downtime after a big 2008, frontman Jim James isn’t resting. For his first official solo outing, James will debut a George Harrison tribute EP entitled “Tribute To” under the name “Yim Yames” on August 4. The six song set is due on ATO and was recorded a few days after Harrison passed away in 2001. James takes on four of Harrison’s tracks from “All Things Must Pass” and two tunes that he penned with the Beatles: “Long, Long, Long” and “Love You To.”

The set is said to evoke a “raw, minimalist feel” with James utilizing just his voice and an acoustic guitar. James refers to Harrison as “a prime example of the healing power of music” in the liner notes.

Also slated is an album with indie folk rockers Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, and M. Ward, under the tongue-in-cheek moniker “Monsters of Folk.” The fifteen song, self-titled set is due September 22 on Shangri-La Music. The four have shared stages dating back to 2004 when they embarked on a tour together that was later referred to by the musicians and crew as the “Monsters of Folk.” The studio recording efforts have taken place over the last two years with all four members playing every instrument featured on the recording.” Continue reading story @ Billboard.com

Rollo & Grady Interview :: King Khan

Rollo & Grady Interview :: King Khan

Arish “King” Khan is a French-Canadian Indian living in Germany and used to go by the name Blacksnake. He’s also the leader of King Khan and the Shrines; a 10-piece retro-soul
rock n’ roll band. Khan puts on one of the most exciting live shows I’ve ever seen and he has over a decade of solid records under his belt. His career started with the garage punk-rock band The Spaceshits, playing alongside his partner in crime Mark “BBQ” Sultan – they weren’t afraid to strip naked and wreak havoc in every town they performed in.

I caught up with Khan by phone in Montreal last week, which was a tough feat considering he doesn’t own a cell phone – he bummed his brothers for the interview. When I called, he was heading out to catch the death-metal band, Mayhem. We discussed his upcoming gospel project with the Black Lips, stage head and his family.

Rollo & Grady Interview :: King Khan

R&G: When did you get back to Montreal from Los Angeles?

Khan: I got back about a week ago, and after that last Shrines tour, me and BBQ were invited to go play in South America, so we played in São Paulo and Buenos Aires, and then flew back to Montreal.

R&G: Do you own a cell phone?

Khan: No, I don’t.

R&G: Will you ever?

Khan: No, I won’t.

R&G:
Do you see it as a hassle to own one?

Khan: Yeah, I’ve gone so far without a cell phone. I’m notorious for borrowing people’s cell phones, but I think it causes brain and testicular damage. It’s too powerful a thing for it not to do something to your balls – if it’s right next to them. I choose life.

R&G: You live in Berlin, right?

Khan: I do.

R&G:
What are you doing in Montreal?

Khan: My brother’s getting married this summer, and I also just got a bunch of invitations to a host of festivals in Canada that me and BBQ have been invited to play. I figured I’d hang out here. This is where I’m from – there’s plenty of stuff to do.

R&G: Will you sing at your brother’s wedding?

Khan: Actually, yeah. The Black Lips are coming down for it too. We’ve got a musical family, so there’ll be some rocking going on for sure.

“TV On The Radio’s Kyp Malone has announced that he will release his debut solo album this autumn. The singer-guitarist is calling his solo project Rain Machine, and is working with producer Ian Brennan (Lucinda Williams) on the album, which will be released by Anti- Records in the US. “I’ve been writing and recording songs alone since I moved to NYC in 2000, at first alone because I didn’t know anyone, then through the years by choice because of a particular freedom that going it alone afforded,” Malone said in a statement.Continue Reading @ NME.com
