Coachella // Under The Radar

Coachella // Under The Radar
Tinariwen

We’re 13 days away from this year’s Coachella festival. I’m heading down on Saturday the 18th to enjoy the festivities. I’m looking forward to catching Thenewno2, Tinariwen and Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti’s sets (schedule permitting).

Tinariwen is a band formed in 1982 of Tuareg people who had been drafted into Muammar al-Gaddafi’s army. They play in the Tishoumaren (“music of the unemployed”) style, and sing mostly in the French and Tamashek languages. The group is known for their extraordinary guitar play.

Thenewno2 is a band formed by George Harrison’s son Dhani Harrison and Oliver Hecks. There are definitely vocal and melodic similarities between Dhani and his late father. The group recently performed on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

Avant-garde musician Ariel Pink was raised in the Pico-Robertson area of Los Angeles and attended Beverly Hills High School. His group Haunted Graffiti opened up several shows for Animal Collective earlier in the year. The band is touring the US in April and May, then they are off to Europe.

TechCrunch // Google In Talks To Acquire Twitter

TechCrunch // Google In Talks To Acquire Twitter

Michael Arrington of TechCrunch reports:
Here’s a heck of a rumor that we’ve sourced from two separate people close to the negotiations: Google is in late stage negotiations to acquire Twitter. We don’t know the price but can assume its well, well north of the $250 million valuation that they saw in their recent funding.

Twitter turned down an offer to be bought by Facebook just a few months ago for half a billion dollars, although that was based partially on overvalued Facebook stock. Google would be paying in cash and/or publicly valued stock, which is equivalent to cash. So whatever the final acquisition value might be, it can’t be compared apples-to-apples with the Facebook deal.Continue Reading

Jayhawks // Reunite For Summer Tour

The Jayhawks are reuniting for a summer tour. While Gary Louris and Mark Olson have been touring together since 2006 and recorded an album in 2007, they’ve done it only as a duo. Not as the Jayhawks. Original members Karen Grotberg, Tim O’Reagan and Marc Perlman will join Louris and Olson for the reunion tour. Expect an album in late 2009.
