The Avett Brothers // Murder In The City

I’ve been hesitant about writing this post. In order to do so, I have to disclose that The Avett Brothers show @ The El Rey on March 30th of this year is one of the best ones I’ve seen in the last 5 years. Better than Radiohead in June 2006 @ The Greek, The White Stripes in August of 2005 @ The Greek and Band Of Horses in December of last year @ The Earl. It’s a strong statement so do not pass judgment until you see these guys live. Brothers Scott, Seth and their platonic brother Bob Crawford, play with an explosive energy and enthusiasm as if each show is their last. It’s that good.

“Pretty Girl From Chile” from their critically acclaimed album, Emotionalism, captures the spirit of one of their live shows. It begins as a traditional bluegrass song, and then at the 2:11 mark it shifts into a Spanish “sambaesque” feel; at 4:37 mark it becomes a full blown punk-rock song.
The song of the day, “Murder In The City“, off of The Second Gleam EP, showcases The Brothers talent for writing and storytelling. It’s truly an amazing song. Keep an eye on these guys; 2009 will be their well deserved breakout year.
