M.I.A.

Boooooooooooooooo. So far I’ve been positive about all of the music I’ve posted on my blog. But enough with these two. Santogold is hack rip-off of M.I.A. I will admit that M.I.A. is talented, but she’s not for me. I’ve been to clubs where they’ve played “Paper Planes” and “Bucky Done Gun” and it’s been somewhat bearable, but I’m ready for this crap to leave the music world.

    Seriously?

Santogold album is a great indie album that mixes rock/pop/reggae/dance seemingly effortlessly with some amazing production.

M.I.A is a good rapper but think she use beats that are too grating. I can listen to 1 track at a time but never a full album.

I don;t get how you think Santi is a rip off of M.I.A, the only thing they share is production by people like Switch.

I just don’t see it Antony. But millions love her. I think Santogold is/was marketed as the next M.I.A. I don’t think Santogold will be making albums 5 years from now. Just my opinion.

I thought the same thing until I heard Santogold explain what she thinks of her music, citing Blondie and a lot of obscure 80s New Wave pioneers (and not so obscure ones, like Devo) among her influences… but 5 years from now? Probably not, as you said, but that could be said of just about any artist these days…

You are right on the 5 year comment, it’s more like 2 years. Who knows. Thanks for stopping by.

you is crazy. mia and santogold are completely different

  6. Richie Says:

I love these two but I see where you think they are similar. Its just something new to music nothing like MIA has ever been done before and Santogold is mashing up all these types of music noone thought would work together.

    just my two cents.

Thanks for your input Richie. I just seems manufactured. Look at the photos above..they must use the same marketing team.

The reason they sound the same is because of Diplo. Seeing is how he is (was in the case of MIA) heavily involved in production of both.

  9. Ken Says:

That they are overhated, I completely agreed!
But theres no doubt Santogold have “the presence” in stage, more than that, she is groundbreaking, have style and a great voice!
M.I.A. is at least interesting! Very talented and original, I dont like the gangsta stuff and the “brazilian funk” beats but they work this out in the next album anyway…

  10. ThomasE Says:

M.I.A. and Santogold are similar to about the degree that, say, Led Zeppelin & the Who were (or if you prefer, A Tribe Called Quest and Blackstar), that is to say, sure, comparisons can be drawn, but certainly not so many that they become even remotely indistinct from one another. M.I.A.’s sound and her intent are much more political, rooted far more in Afrikaa Bambaataa than, say, Kate Bush and the other, sweeter, synthier influences in the Santogold mix. Among current artists, I’d be much more inclined to compare Santogold to M83. Just sayin’.

Haterrrrr…holmes! But hey to each his own and thanks for lettin me copthe tracks even though I’ll still buy it…but get use to it this shit aint going anywhere Diplo is amazingly diverse…and I’m sure he will continue to produce upcoming creative artist…

I’m really surprised that you called her an M.I.A. hack…yet you posted “Lights Out” on this page to use as a comparison. There’s nothing on M.I.A.’s album that sounds even close to that. I’ve listened to both albums and spent my money on Santogold. The fact is, M.I.A. is more popular…and like most people’s way of thinking, popularity is often equated with “better”. I even saw someone post on another “comparison” page, “M.I.A. has more MySpace friends so I pick her.” I think the true talent lies with Santogold and I’m with ThomasE on the idea trying to compare them.

  13. Atl OG Says:

Santogold has the true and unique talent. I have a feelnig Santogold will be around 5 years from now and doing far better than M.I.A. M.I.A is solid but Santo is unique

  14. Anonymous Says:

i think M.I.A is fine and thats the only thing that matters to me

  15. Miqui Says:

I love them both and I have been a fan of M.I.A. since “Galang” ( wasn’t that around 2005?), but could never sit through a whole cd. Her music can make you go insane by track 5 or make you wonder what you are listening to. I love Santogold’s cd. I still rock to her cd months after buying and enjoy it every time. Santo isn’t out as much yet, but this was the same case for M.I.A. It seems like people heard “Paperplanes” and it was like she was a brand new artist all over again. But people were not familiar with her. You never know Sant might get her opportunity down the line. She hasnt even gotten a chance to be a one hit wonder. And besides if she doesn’t get famous she will continue to make money since she has like 4 songs off her cd as commercial backgrounds.

Mia makes my ears bleed. definately an insult to all music ever created

  17. wisy Says:
