Rollo & Grady :: Top 40 Shows – SXSW 2011
![bottle-rocket-1 [] bottle-rocket-1 []](http://www.rollogrady.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/bottle-rocket-1-.jpg)
This week in Austin at SXSW, there are a ridiculous amount of daily music options to choose from. It’s overwhelming even for some SXSW veterans, but is especially so for 1st time visitors. We tried to simplify for you the process of choosing from thousands of shows by selecting 40 shows that we feel will be special performances.
We highly recommend catching every Charles Bradly & Menahan Street Band , White Denim, Middle Brother, J. Roddy Walston and The Business, King Tuff, JEFF The Brotherhood, and Black Joe Lewis shows. The breakout artist of the festival is going to be J. Roddy Walston and The Business; make sure to check them out, as their music is money back guaranteed. Also, Deer Tick, aka Deervana, will be playing all Nirvana covers at the Lustre Pearl on Saturday, March 19th @ 1am. Deer Tick’s John McCauley does an incredible job of channeling his inner Kurt Cobain.

These bands look horrible, sound even worse, like a dog pooped in their mouth before they wrote their songs.

Fantastic list! Can’t wait for James Vincent McMorrow – he’s dreamy…
Might I also recommend seeing MEIKO at St. David’s Historic Sanctuary on Sat. 3/19 – her set time is 10:30pm – such a talent – and funny as hell too!

It’s ironic that in supposedly post-racial America I can count on one hand (from what I can make out in the photos) the number of obviously integrated bands. I remember seeing TVOR sometime between 2004 and 6 at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park bandshell and the crowd of mostly white hipsters being totally befuddled. Maybe if people made music with musicians from racial, ethnic, cultural, sexual identities and socio-economics groups from beyond their own comfort zones there’d be more than the handful of different sounds and technical approaches we hear over and over.
