Rollo & Grady // Afrobeat Volume #1
Fela Kuti

The closest I’ve come to experiencing Fela’s music was through his youngest son Seun Kuti at The El Rey Theatre back in June. Seun currently leads his father’s former band Egypt 80. He first played with the band when he was only 9 years. The show was amazing, but I have to admit I enjoyed Egypt 80 more than Seun’s singing.

Brooklyn’s Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra are the best American band performing Afrobeat music. The band is modeled after Fela Kuti’s Africa 70, but also incorporates elements of jazz, funk, dub, improvised music, and traditional drumming from Cuba and West Africa.
