Pearl Jam is so damn good, but I can go for years without hearing a song by Eddie Vedder and company. During the grunge days they were a close 2nd to Nirvana. Alice In Chains are currently in heavy rotation these days. Long live Mookie Blaylock.

Dude, I seriously dig your blog. It’s a regular stop off for me, but I have to say that calling Pearl Jam a “close 2nd to Nirvana” is missing much of what was offered in the early 90s. Being a veteran non-commercial DJ (KFJC, Pirate Cat Radio, and more), we considered P.J. to be nothing more than a record label “supergroup”, like Journey. Yes, they are talented. Yes, two of them were once in the great Green River. But, no, they were not a close second to Nirvana. As much as I loved Nirvana (saw them twice before Nevermind was even released), there were many that continue to stand out.
To name but a few:
Mudhoney
The Melvins
Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, QOTSA)
Flipper
The Cows
Mono Men
Tad
Mother Love Bone (though I think they too are somewhat overrated)

The Pandoras
You see, I really do appreciate your opinion, just as these bands are in my opinion better than Pearl Jam. It reminds me of something I said to an ex-girlfriend back in 91 or 92 “which of these bands will anyone remember in 2000? 2010?” I predicted that P.J. would be on the list of those still played, but that’s because they’ve been produced to be remembered.

John-great points. I really enjoyed Pearl Jam’s music until about 26 years-old. i didn’t dig deeper into the Seattle scene beyond Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and Mudhoney. I strongly disagree on the Journey reference. That is harsh. But you are knowledgeable on the subject and I respect your opinion. Mark Lanegan is still kicking it live in about 20 different bands, but he still flies under the radar. Thanks for checking out the site. Your feedback is welcome anytime.
