Menahan Street Band // Make The Road By Walking
The Menahan Street Band’s ‘Make The Road By Walking‘ just missed my list of the Top 25 albums of 2008. They also had the 2nd best album name of the year behind Atmosphere’s ‘When Life Gives You a Lemon You Paint That Shit Gold‘. MSB is fronted by Tom “Tommy TNT” Brenneck the guitarist for Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings & The Budos Band. He is joined by an all-star cast of Homer Steinweiss (Dap Kings), Mike Deller (Budos Band), Dave Guy (Kaiser Chiefs, Amy Winehouse), Leon Michels (Mighty Imperials) and Nick Movshon (Antibalas & TV On The Radio).
The album was recorded in Brenneck’s apartment in his bedroom on 250 Menahan Street in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The band pays homage to Blaxploitation grooves and peppers it with funk sounds of the 60’s and 70’s. The music would work well in an episode of Starsky and Hutch (not the shitty one with Ben Stiller). Definitely check out the Budos Band’s material.

I agree. It’s fucked up. It’s seems like they’ve always been churning out quality funk/jazz in NYC. I lived in NYC for several years, it was all over the place. I don’t think it’s going to change. The Bay Area is our best bet.
