Last FM // Top 10 Albums Of 2008

Here’s Last FM’s list of the Top 10 albums of 2008. Pretty weak. Thoughts?
10 Sigur Ros – Med Sud I Eyrum..(Beautiful Album, though it’s not for me)
9 Jack Johnson – Sleep Through The Static (I used to love JJ, I outgrew my love)
8 Hot Chip – Made In The Dark (Haven’t listened to the album)
7 Death Cab For Cutie – Narrow Stairs (I’ve never understood the appeal of this band)
6 The Kooks – Konk (Not as good as their 1st album)
5 The Ting Tings – We Started Nothing (Shut Up And Let Me Go)
4 Nine Inch Nails – Ghosts I-IV (Not for me)
3 Portishead – Third (I really like this album)
2 MGMT – Oracular Spectacular (Super-talented. But I’m not 100% down with electronica)
1 Coldplay – Viva La Vida (??????)

Last FM seems to have terrible taste in music. The NIN release? It’s a bunch of backround noise, zzzzz….
The Coldplay album is some of the most generic ‘we believe the press that we are the next U2′ crap I’ve ever heard.
2008 was a great year for music: Black Keys, Kings of Leon, Raconteurs…
Keep up the good work, great blog.

Coldplay #1? They must be joking. By far their worst album. Well, actually only the first 2 Albums were good.
Well, Orac. Spect. is really good, so #2 is okay.
You gotta listen to Hot Chip! You really have to. Check out “OUT AT THE PICTURES”. Just makes you dance!
#9 #7 #6 #5 #4: Just average albums.
#10 and #1: Good Band Names are not equal to good albums.
What about Fleet Foxes, Santogold, Felice Brothers? There were so many more in 2008.

Hey Hauth. I will give a listen to Hot Chip. I love some of their old stuff, but I don’t listen to electronica/pop anymore. You will be disappointed with my list. I’m not a Santogold or Fleet Foxes fan. I like MGMT.
I’m glad you feel that way about Sigur Ros.
Thanks for coming by the blog.
Take Care.

Rollogrady,
I’m sorry but I have to defend, Jack Johnson and Sleep Through the Static. I know JJ got so popular with his unique poetry and kick-back beach guitar but the uniqueness of his sound, the consciousness of his lyrics, his romantic idealism, and the mastery of his craft (I think he’s really well produced), created a niche sound that listeners on a wide scale really wanted.
The qualities of his music made him pop. He never made pop music.
I’ve listened to Sleep Through the Static many, many times and I still get lost in the depth and mystery of his poetry. His themes still apply to the most important areas of my life: love, romance, courage, consciousness, faith, conservation, the power and beauty of nature. His poetry and metaphors always ask me to take a look at myself, to wake up and see life in a new way.
My question is this: Do you think you outgrew your love for JJ’s music because it became ‘pop’ and you just got tired of it, or is it because you got cynical, the world got cynical, no space left for the virtues of romance, love and wisdom? Maybe it’s neither…
I ask that question because that’s what happened to me.

I love your blog. Keep up the great work!
