Kokolo // Soul Power
New York-based Afrobeat band Kokolo recently released their fourth album, Heavy Hustling. On Hustling, the band covers eight James Brown classics incorporating their latin-jazz sound mixed in with the stylings of Fela Kuti. Band leader, Ray Lugi, explains “I thought it would be interesting to make explicit the implicit connection that exists between Nigerian Afrobeat and American Funk and explore the musical dialogue that took place across the Atlantic during the golden era, a dialogue that included the New York Latin sound.” For fans of Antibalas, Maceo Parker, Femi and Seun Kuti.
