Cat Power // Wonderwall

Cat Power // Wonderwall

Oasis’Wonderwall” is one of the greatest songs of all-time. It was thought that the song was written about Noel Gallagher’s then girlfriend Meg Matthews. Noel refuted it by saying “The meaning of that song was taken away from me by the media who jumped on it. And how do you tell your Mrs. it’s not about her once she’s read it is? It’s about an imaginary friend who’s going to come and save you from yourself.”

Over the years there have been some excellent covers of the song. Cat Power and Ryan Adam’s versions stand out.

I found a cool remix by guy named Jon Reed AKA “Elements Of Noise”. Sometimes remixes ruin the song, but Jon does a great job of covering Cat Power’s version. He has several more remixes on his Myspace page. Worth a listen.

Rage Against The Machine // Fuck Tha Police

Rage Against The Machine // Fuck Tha Police

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) September 4th
“After a rousing concert at the Target Center in Minneapolis, police reportedly arrested close to 85 protesters after a standoff near 1st Avenue Wednesday night.

Officers set up lines to contain the group of about 200 protesters shortly after midnight, as they left a Rage Against the Machine concert; a band, known for its disdain current politicians and policies, or what they call ‘the corruption of the American democracy.’

A day before, the band held an impromptu concert on the steps of the State Capitol. They sang an acapella version of one of their signature songs, ‘Bulls On Parade,’ which accuses the arms industry of encouraging military action for profit.

Eight years ago, as President Bill Clinton addressed the nation from the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, Calif., riots tore through the streets outside, as hundreds of protesters who had also recently attended a Rage Against the Machine concert, clashed with police.

Due to that incident, Twin Cities police agencies turned to a Los Angeles Police commander for advice in preventing a similar situation.

“We brought [the commander] in, in part, because of his experience with Rage Against the Machine. We have prepared very diligently for the two or three different events where they have been billed to attend,” said St. Paul Police Chief John Harrington.

Crews removed newspaper boxes near the Target Center earlier in the day, hoping to eliminate items that could be used as weapons off the streets.

Those arrested after Wednesday night’s concert are being held at the Ramsey County Jail, pending criminal charges.”

I would love to be a fly on the wall at the Ramsey County Jail tonight.

Gnarls Barkley // Gone Daddy Gone

Gnarls Barkley // Gone Daddy Gone
Danger “Brian Burton” Mouse & Cee-Lo Green

Payback is hell. The Violent Femmes cover of Gnarls Barkely’s Crazy” is hard on the ears. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the Violent Femmes in th 80’s.

In an interview Danger Mouse said he was driving to the studio one day and heard “Gone Daddy Gone” and felt the Femmes didn’t get enough love for the classic hit. So he and Cee-Lo recorded the cover that afternoon for their album St. Elsewhere.

Ryan Adams // Down In A Hole

Ryan Adams // Down In A Hole

According to Ryan, while living in the New York’s legendary Hotel Chelsea, he was doing speedballs (mixture of heroin and cocaine) every day. Thankfully the eccentric singer-songwriter quit cold turkey in 2006, avoiding the fate of deceased Alice in Chains frontman, Layne Staley. On his recent tour supporting 2007’s critically acclaimed album Easy Tiger (buy), he often played Staley’s prophetic “Down in a Hole”; one of my favorite Alice in Chains songs.

John Mayer does an excellent cover of Radiohead’s “Kid A“. Unfortunately, he joins the ranks of Santogold & M.I.A. of artists that I will not post about again.

I love Susan Tedeschi’s version of the Stones’ “You Got The Silver“.

Pearl Jam // The Dock Of The Bay

Pearl Jam // The Dock Of The Bay

Pearl Jam is so damn good, but I can go for years without hearing a song by Eddie Vedder and company. During the grunge days they were a close 2nd to Nirvana. Alice In Chains are currently in heavy rotation these days. Long live Mookie Blaylock.
