Alela Diane(Rough Trade Records)

Alela Diane – The Pirate's Gospel (iTunes)

Portland, Oregon (via Nevada City, California) native Alela Diane is a rising star in the music world. Earlier this year she was named Paste Magazine’s “The Best Of What’s Next 26″. Her critically acclaimed 2006 album ‘The Pirate's Gospel’ reminds me of Cat Power’s voice/music on her 1995-1998 albums Myra Lee and Moon Pix. Alela recently lent her vocals to the covers project Headless Heroes.

Her forthcoming album ‘To Be Still’ will be released on February 17 (pre-order).

The Avett Brothers(American Recordings)
Rollo & Grady // 5 Artists To Watch In 2009
The Avett Brothers – Emotionalism (iTunes)

The Avett Brothers is the best live band I’ve seen in the past 5 years. Brothers Scott, Seth and their platonic brother Bob Crawford, play with an explosive energy and enthusiasm as if each show was their last. 2008 was technically a breakout year for the band, but 2009 will expose them to a larger audience. They recently signed with Rick Rubin’s label American Recordings; Rubin also produced their 5th full-length album. The Brothers will open up for the Dave Matthews Band in March and April.

Hush Arbors(Ecstatic Peace)
Rollo & Grady // 5 Artists To Watch In 2009
Hush Arbors – Hush Arbors (iTunes)

Singer-songwriter Keith Wood is the genius behind Hush Arbors. He’s been kicking around for years as a solo artist and contributing member of Six Organs of Admittance, Current 93, Wooden Wand and Sunburned Hand Of Man. 2008 should have been the breakout year for Wood; I cannot help but think if he recorded his recent album in a remote cabin in Wisconsin he would be a bigger star.

Wood recently told me that his best work is yet to come. His next album will be out this summer on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label.

The Soft Pack(Unsigned)
Rollo & Grady // 5 Artists To Watch In 2009

San Diego/ Los Angeles based group The Soft Pack are one of the hottest bands out today. Their self-titled EP has garnered well deserved praise from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and Stereogum. The unsigned band has generated interest from the labels; look for them to sign early next year.

The Soft Pack play straight up Rock ‘n’ Roll. The band is influenced by The Velvet Underground and have drawn comparisons to The Strokes. They will be playing at The Echo 1/28, 2/4 and 2/13. Then they are heading to the UK to play several dates with The Black Lips and The Breeders.

Tulsa(Park The Van Records)
Rollo & Grady // 5 Artists To Watch In 2009
Tulsa – I Was Submerged (iTunes)

The Boston-based band Tulsa is headed by talented singer/songwriter Carter Tanton. His reverb drenched vocals are reminiscent of Jim James’ earlier work. Tanton is currently working with producer Brian Deck (Califone and Iron & Wine) on the follow-up to their 2007 EP, I Was Submerged. Look for an early summer release.

Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog // Break On Through

Marc Ribots Ceramic Dog // Break On Through

Longtime Tom Waits and Elvis Costello guitarist Marc Ribot made a welcomed comeback in 2008. The guitarist and composer worked with Jolie Holland on her album The Living and the Dead and with the Black Keys on two tracks for Attack & Release (So He Won’t Break and Lies).

Ribot also founded the new power trio Ceramic Dog. He is joined by bassist Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Ches Smith. His new album Party Intellectuals is one of his best in years. Ribot’s signature free-jazz sound is accompanied by heavy rock chords. His punk-rock version of the Doors ‘Break on Through‘ is excellent.

Dig Deeper: Marc Ribot – Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos

From Ribot’s website:
Ceramic Dog
1. chien du faience: expression: frozen with emotion, as in the perfectly still moment before a fight breaks out.
2. Ultimate kitsch object.
3. A free/punk/funk/experimental/psychedelic/post electronica collective, featuring Marc (Cubanos Postizos, John Zorn, Tom Waits, etc etc), plus two of the best young players on the New York/California underground improv/experimental rock scene, Shazad Ismailly (bass) and Chess Smith (drums)
4. Not a ‘project’: a real band.

Christopher Wallace (l) and Jamal ‘Gravy’ Woolard (r)

I’ve seen several trailers for the new Biggie Smalls biopic ‘Notorious’. Generally these movies are destined to fail, but this one looks promising. The cast is spot on. Brooklyn lyricist-turned-thespian Jamal Woolard plays the role of Biggie. According to reports he endured an intense boot-camp-like training at Juilliard, where he worked on his method-acting techniques to play the slain rapper.

The soundtrack includes Hypnotize, Juicy, Party And Bullshit, Kick In The Door to name a few buy viagra and cialis from india. Biggie’s son Christopher Wallace Jr. plays young B.I.G. in the film and also contributes a song One More Chance (remix) to the soundtrack.

But no Big Poppa??

Air France // No Way Down EP

Air France // No Way Down EP

I forgot to add Air France’s ‘No Way Down’ to my favorite EPs of the year. The pop-duo from Gothenburg, Sweden have the breezy island thing going for them. They come dangerously close to sounding like W Hotel elevator music, but the beats and harmonies are more complex than the standard fare. “Sorta Like A Dream”

Key Downloads: No Way Down, No Excuses, Beach House (2006)
